Strategy implementation and business planning

The ability to implement strategy sets the most successful organisations apart.

Strategy sets the destination and direction; strategy implementation and business planning details the roadmap and means to get there. Neither works without the other, but leaders have often been taught how to plan but not how to implement, and this is reflected in the high strategy implementation failure rate.

Strategy implementation is rapidly growing in importance for three key reasons:

  • In response to increasingly volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous (VUCA) environments, strategic review cycles are getting shorter, requiring organisations to also implement more frequently;
  • Many organisations are transforming to compete in a digital market, requiring them to implement new strategies quickly; and
  • COVID-19 has required organisations to rethink and redesign their strategies in response.
