Stakeholder engagement and public consultation

Stakeholder engagement is a critical part of your organisation’s strategic planning.

A stakeholder is anyone who has a ‘stake’ in your organisation, because of their interest, influence, or both: they include shareholders, staff, customers, board members, partners, vendors, volunteers, funders, government agencies, and many others.

Stakeholder engagement involves systematically identifying who your stakeholders are, understanding and analysing their needs, interests and attitudes, and then planning and implementing activities to foster connections and build trust, confidence and support (or, in some cases, minimise resistance). Constant evaluation and review of the effectiveness of your stakeholder engagement is also essential.

What I can offer

Much of my career has been devoted designing and implementing effective stakeholder engagement, communication and public consultation strategies for diverse organisations.

These have included Child, Youth and Family, the Department of Labour, the National Library, the New Zealand Fire Service, Industry New Zealand and Wellington City Council. In many cases, I developed and implemented the first-ever strategic stakeholder engagement framework and strategy for the organisation.

I can work with you to develop and implement the right stakeholder engagement approach for your organisation – one that ensures you are reaching the right people in the right way.

As well as my extensive professional experience, I am a Graduate member of the International Association for Public Participation (IAP2), the pre-eminent international organisation advancing the practice of public participation. I hold the IAP2 Certificate in Engagement along with other IAP2 engagement tools and methodologies. I also hold, and am an accredited trainer for, APMG International’s Stakeholder Engagement Certificate.
